Spaced Repetition: The Key to Making Learning Stick

Remember that video we shared about Retrieval Practice? Well, Spaced Repetition isn't a totally separate strategy, it's actually based on the same principles of retrieval practice. By forcing yourself to recall information at spaced intervals, you're actively engaging with the material and strengthening those memories in your long-term memory.

🤔 What does this even mean? Imagine your brain is like a path through a field. The first time you learn something, you're trampling a faint path. Over time, unless you re-walk that path, it'll grow over. Spaced repetition is deliberately walking that path at increasing intervals, making it a well-worn trail in your memory. 🛣

📱 How to Put it into Action

• Flashcards (Again!): Just like with retrieval practice, the key is active recall before checking the answer. Struggle is your friend!
• Supercharge Your Flashcards with Apps: Just like the Zorbi app Anki (https://apps.ankiweb.net/) takes the manual work out of spaced repetition. It schedules reviews for you based on algorithms to optimize memorization.
• Supercharge Your Apps with AI: But that's not all! Leverage artificial intelligence to streamline the process even further. For instance, services like PDF2Anki (https://www.pdf2-anki.com/) automatically convert your study PDFs into flashcards, saving you a massive amount of time. ➕ Bonus Tip, Interleaving: Mix up different subject flashcards during your study sessions. 🤔 You, or your teacher might have concerns about using AI for learning, e.g. calling it plagiarism. But it’s not that simple. AI is a tool that can help you learn and work.

⚠ It is important to consider the risks associated with using AI for learning. One significant risk is the Illusion of Learning. When AI does writing, paraphrasing, analyzing, assessing or other cognitive tasks on our behalf, it deprives our brains of the opportunity to learn.

🤔 Now, the important question. How to implement Retrieval Practice and avoid common pitfalls?

🗂 Flashcards (The Right Way): Actively try to recall the information before flipping the card. ❌ Passively reading a question and immediately checking the back. ✅ Struggling to remember the definition of "mitosis," then verifying your answer.

🗣 Explanatory Teaching (Beyond Recitation): Don't simply recite facts to a friend.
